Save the Children Chief Executive reacts to DfID announcement

The Department for International Development (DfID) yesterday announced it would give £42 million in emergency assistance for hunger crises.

Tuesday 23 September 2008

Jasmine Whitbread, Save the Children Chief Executive, said: “DfID’s announcement couldn’t come at a more crucial time. Rocketing food prices around the world have left some of the poorest families, particularly those in Ethiopia and Bangladesh, unable to buy food and many thousands of children struggling to survive. This means the needs of chronically malnourished children are not being met.

"Today's announcement sets an example for world leaders who will gather at the UN summit later this week to follow the UK's lead and respond to the current global food crisis by explicitly putting money towards tackling malnutrition. DfID must ensure that this investment results in reducing chronic malnutrition".
