Gwyneth Paltrow joins fight to save children's lives
Renowned actress Gwyneth Paltrow is to be the first global ambassador for Save the Children's biggest campaign to save children's lives.
Monday 24 March 2008
Gwyneth Paltrow will be working with Save the Children to help publicise the three year campaign in the UK and the USA. We want 10 million people to take action by 2010 for the 10 million children who die every year - the majority from diseases that are easily preventable or treatable. A simple action today can save a life.
Gwyneth Paltrow said, "When Save the Children told me just how simple it is to help save a child's life I was completely won over. A preventable death is inexcusable. I am committed to do what I can to help Save the Children get the message out to millions of families. Just a few simple actions can help save a life. Join the campaign and together we can save many more children's lives."
The main killers of children under the age of five are malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea. Save the Children's campaign shows simple ways the public can help such as:
- joining our online global petition to demand world leaders play their part in saving children's lives
- giving just £5, which Save the Children will use to send a mosquito net to a child at risk of malaria.
- visiting Save the Children's interactive website This is Kroo Bay where you can meet the people of Kroo Bay, a slum in Sierra Leone. Log on and help save a life.
Jasmine Whitbread, Save the Children UK's Chief Executive said, "We're delighted Gwyneth will be supporting the campaign. Our challenge is to reduce the number of children dying needlessly every year. Save the Children can't do this on our own. With Gwyneth's support we hope to bring our campaign to new audiences".
Save the Children will be campaigning globally, including in India, the USA and Sierra Leone in the first year.
