On average, over the last five years, from every £1 you have given:

  • 82p has directly benefited children through our charitable work
  • the remaining 18p has been used to raise more money.

How we raised £148.4 million, our total income

In the year 1 April 2006 to 31 March 2007, we raised £148.4 million, the second highest level of income ever raised by Save the Children.

The previous year, we had raised the highest amount ever - £163.2 million - because of the responses to the tsunami and other emergency appeals. This year, funding for our long-term development work, excluding emergencies, increased by 4%.  Our income breaks down as follows:

  • 43.3% (£64.2m) from donations and gifts
  • 36.8% (£54.6m) from grants
  • 9.1% (£13.5m) from legacies
  • 4.8% (£7.1m) from retailing activities
  • 2.1% (£3.1m) from gifts in kind
  • 3.9% (£5.9m) from other sources


Our overall annual expenditure

Our overall annual expenditure in the year 1 April 2006 to 31 March 2007 breaks down as follows:

  • 83.7% (£117.1m) on charitable activities
  • 11.1% (£15.6m) on fundraising
  • 4.7% (£6.5m) on retail
  • 0.5% (£0.7m) on governance.
