Children’s Emergency Fund

We save thousands of children’s lives every year through our emergency response and preparedness work. But we want to do more.

Abdi, four, has his upper arm measured by a Save the Children worker at a treatment center for malnourished children in Kenya. Abdi had lost a third of his weight due to malnutrition and he came down with a life threatening case of malaria.

Why is the Children’s Emergency Fund so important?

In the past we launched an appeal once an emergency had happened – then we had to wait until we had raised enough funds to be able to respond. With the Children’s Emergency Fund we now have the money in place to act much more quickly.

Most lives are lost in the first days after an emergency. The quicker we respond, the more lives we save. This is especially important when emergencies don't make it onto the news, despite the suffering of thousands of children.

When donors see we are already active on the ground they're more likely to give us additional funding  — helping us reach more children. By releasing £1.9 million from the Children's Emergency Fund in 2008/09 we were able to secure a further £25.8 million from donors that year and reach 1,629,000 people caught up in emergencies.

With your support we can maintain this crucial fund.

In 2008/09 we reached 1,041,686 children caught up in 39 emergencies in 26 countries.

Why is it important?

  • Most lives are lost in the first days after an emergency. So the quicker we respond, the more lives we save.
  • Raising funds to respond to emergencies through public appeals takes time, sometimes weeks and months.
  • Many emergencies don't make it onto the news, despite the suffering of thousands of children.
  • By responding quickly, we can attract more support by showing donors the work we’ve already done, enabling us to reach even more children and their families.
