Coming to a new school can be a bit scary at first, with new people to meet, new teachers, lots of new things to learn and even new food at meal times!

1. I’m scared about coming to a new school.
It can be a bit scary coming to a new school but try not to be scared. The teachers can help you with lots of things. Talk to the other children in your class and try to make new friends.

2. I can’t speak English very well.
There may be other children at school who do not speak English very well so don’t be shy. Try your best to speak. The teachers can help you. There may be other children at school who speak one of your languages who can talk to you if you need some help.

3. I don’t know how to do my work.
Ask your teacher if you do not know how to do your work. Don’t copy someone else’s work. This is cheating and you will get in trouble with the teacher for doing this.

4. I don’t know what food I can eat.
If you do not know which food is halal or kosher, you can ask the teacher or dinner lady to tell you. If the school does not have food that you can eat, you could bring food from home instead of eating a school lunch, or you could ask the teacher to see if the school could provide this food for you.

5. Someone said something unkind to me about my country, religion or colour.
Tell a teacher about what has happened or ask your parents or brother or sister to do this for you. Stay with a group or walk round with your friends so you feel safe. You could phone Childline on 0800 1111 and talk to them about it.

6. I want to take time off school to celebrate my religious festivals and have a room at school where I can pray.
You can take three days off school a year for religious festivals as well as Christmas and Easter. Ask your parents to send a letter to the teacher or speak to them.
The school could make a special room for prayer available if there are a few children who would like this. You could ask your teacher to help. If there is no room for you to use, your parents could write or speak to the school about it.
