Applications to National Asylum Support Service

The National Asylum Support Service (NASS) was set up under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 to provide support and accommodation for destitute asylum seekers. NASS considers whether an applicant and/or their dependants meet the test of destitution as set out in the legislation and then to what extent support should be provided. This support may include the provision of accommodation and cash for essential needs. If the asylum seeker has friends or family in the country who can assist, then they will be expected to turn to them for support before turning to NASS.

The definition of destitution is now in the National Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 s 19.

The Scottish Refugee Council has a contract with NASS, which requires them to help people with applications for NASS support. They do this through their website.
