Unaccompanied Minors and SEFS
Since the Home Office started interviewing unaccompanied minor asylum seekers in late 2003, they have introduced an SEF aimed specifically at them. It is very similar to the adult's SEF form in style and content. It is easy to read and can be completed by the child with the help of a representative without much difficulty. Unaccompanied minors have 20 working days to complete and return the SEF.
SEF’s are being phased out under the New Asylum Model and details of the substantive claim are now obtained at the asylum interview.
The evidence of a child should be approached and assessed with age-appropriate expectancies. Extra sensitivity often requires to be afforded to a child and interview responses and/or oral evidence at appeals should be extracted as tactfully and briefly as possible. This is not always the case in practice, however, and representatives should remain vigilant to ensure fair treatment of their client. See below for more details about claims by unaccompanied minors.
