In-country Applicants
In-country applicants apply to the Immigration and Nationality Directorate of the Home Office after entry to the UK. In 2001, two thirds of all asylum seekers made their claim in-country and a majority of claims continue to be lodged in country; Claiming asylum in-country can be treated as making the claim less credible. However in 1996 a Social Security Advisory Committee report said:
'There are many valid reasons why people do not make their claim immediately on arrival. Lack of knowledge of procedures, arriving in a confused and frightened state, language difficulties or fear of officialdom may all be insuperable barriers to making any kind of approach to the authorities at port of entry.'
Therefore in-country applicants should not be dissuaded from applying.
