Question: how do we save children?

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. What’s that got to do with us I hear you ask?! Well, saving children isn’t easy. Where we can, through our programme work, we’ll save those lives one at a time. But we can and must save even more lives by changing the systems and societies that allow these deaths to happen. In the UK and all over the world, women and children do not receive the care they deserve.

Niger: A woman’s lot

Today, I’ve got it in for Nigerien men. Women’s rights definitely haven’t made their way to Niger. Driving through the arid country all I can see is men sitting around in the shade while the women are in the hot (and I mean 45 degree hot) sun pounding millet, washing clothes, looking for food, fetching water and looking after their children.

One wife or two?

Second to politics, the hot topic in Niger is polygamy.

Many discussions amongst the staff over lunch result in two camps: ‘one wife is enough trouble!’ or ‘trouble is halved with polygamy!’ When I ask whether the first wife has a say, quite simply the answer is no. But it’s ok apparently, because they’ve known since the outset that it’s less ‘til death do us part’ and more ‘wait til another wife comes along.’

Women in History
