Children’s voices in Nigeria
Wednesday 3 June 2009
Abuja is a new city, now the capital of Nigeria, but the population is steadily expanding. I am here working with the staff on their child survival campaigning activity for the Day of the African child. Children definitely have a voice in Nigeria. I have seen them on the news talking to government officials about issues such as child labour and abuse.
Nigeria loses 1 million children each year to preventable diseases – they lose the most children in the whole of Africa. Everyone here - government and civil society - agrees that it is a problem. A mother on average has 5.7 children. The Day of the African Child will highlight this issue with a parade, a visit from the First Lady and, at the heart of the activity, children giving their opinion on what they think their government should do.
You can support these voices by making your mark today!
